My approach to mental health care
I offer practical, evidence-based therapy for adults who want to feel more steady, supported, and back in control. My approach is grounded in proven tools and strategies, but it’s always tailored to you, your pace, and what you’re dealing with day to day.
In sessions, I draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution Focused Therapy, and the principles of Positive Psychology. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to put on a brave face. You can talk things through without judgement, make sense of what’s going on, and work on what’s getting in the way, whether that’s stress, low mood, relationship pressure, anger, anxiety, or just feeling off track.
Sessions are available in person in my office at 1395 Toorak Rd, Camberwell, or online, with or without a GP referral.
“John created room for candid conversations, reflection and progress. He helped break down challenging topics and provided clear steps I could readily apply. He also challenged my thinking, and I left each session with decisions I followed through on.”
Hello, I’m John
For the past 25 years as a psychologist, I’ve been curious about how people manage life’s challenges, what makes problems feel overwhelming, and what helps people move forward.
In my work, I’ve seen the same themes come up again and again: stress, self-doubt, relationship strain, burnout, and that feeling of being stuck.
Outside of therapy, I’ve coached executives, led teams, taught performance psychology and business strategy, and coached my son as he competed in Paralympic sport.
I’m a strong believer in the mind-body connection, and I’ve lectured at the Australian College of Applied Psychology, APM College of Business, the University of Sydney, the NSW Institute of Sport, the Fitness Institute of Australia, and the Conservatorium of Music.
If you’re looking for calm, dependable support to better manage life’s demands and reconnect with what matters, I’d be glad to talk about how we might work together.

FAQs
If you’re considering counselling, you might be wondering what to expect.
Here are a few common questions clients ask before we start. If you need more detail, I’m happy to talk it through.
What happens in the first session?
In your first session, we’ll talk through what’s been going on for you, what you’re finding challenging, and what you’d like support with. It’s a chance to share your priorities at your own pace and get a sense of whether this approach feels comfortable and helpful for you.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. I offer sessions via secure video for people who prefer to meet remotely or who live outside the area. Many people find that online sessions give them flexibility while still feeling connected and supported.
Is this therapy or something else?
This is psychological therapy. My work is grounded in evidence-based approaches, with a focus on helping you understand patterns, build coping skills, and support your wellbeing. Sessions are guided by what you need, and we work together to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and structured way.
What kind of concerns do people usually bring?
People come to therapy for many reasons — feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low in mood, or unsure how to navigate a difficult time. Others want support with relationships, stress, life transitions, grief, or noticing unhelpful patterns that keep repeating. There’s no “right” reason to come; therapy can be helpful whenever you’re wanting understanding, clarity, or change.
How long do people usually stay engaged?
Some people find a few sessions helpful for navigating a specific situation, while others prefer ongoing support over a longer period. There’s no set timeline — the pace and length of therapy are shaped by your needs, goals, and what feels right for you.
